John Denver and opera fans can look forward to something when we take a look behind the scenes of the making of the CD “Great Voices Sing John Denver”.
Legendary record producer Milton Okun, along with arranger and conductor Lee Holdridge, brings some of the opera’s best-known names to sing John Denver’s famous hits.
John Denver, one of the most famous and popular artists in the world, tragically died in a plane crash in October 1997. But his music lives on. In “Great Voices Sing John Denver” the greatest opera singers in the world pay homage to his work with songs such as “Leaving on a Jet Plane”, “Sunshine on my Shoulders”, “This Old Guitar”, “Calypso” and “Annie’s Song”. They explain what moved them to Denver and what songs they perform.
Artists include Placido Domingo, Danielle de Niese, Matthew Polenzani (vocals in English and Italian), Patricia Racette, René Pape, Nathan Gunn, Dolora Zajick, Thomas Hampson, Rod Gilfry, Denyce Graves and Shenyang (vocals in English and Mandarian) Daniel Montenegro, Placido Domingo Jr., Stuart Skelton and Barbara Padilla.
The film shows that there are no barriers by country or style with this unforgettable music.
Plácido Domingo sings “Maybe Love” in a duet with his son Plácido Domingo Jr. He originally sang it more than 30 years ago with John Denver himself. “The re-recording of this song with my son brings me back to a wonderful moment in my life”, he says.
The idea for this collaboration came from Rosemary, the wife of the music producer Milton Okun. It was a happy marriage between his two professional loves: John Denver – whom he represented for 40 years – and his work and friendship with the world’s great opera singers.
“Great Voices Sing John Denver” was not only a big crowd puller at the Sedona International Film Festival, but also won the Special Jury Prize of the Spirit of Independents at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, as well as the award for best documentary producer and best music in film at the Madrid International Film Festival. It was also selected at the Newport Beach Film Festival, the Beverly Hills Film Festival, and the Lucerne International Film Festival.
