88-year-old Thomas Paul Anderson of Elk Rapids, formerly Traverse City and Alden, passed away on Friday, October 2, 2020.
Tom was born on March 26, 1932 in Alden to Clarence and Lena Anderson. Alden and Torch Lake were always his home during his lifetime.
Tom grew up in Alden and attended the local elementary school through eighth grade. He spent his high school years in Elk Rapids and Mancelona in 1950. The following year he signed as a deckhand with the Great Lakes Ore Freighter, the William E. Corey. After one season, he entered first grade at Northwestern Michigan College and left later that year to enroll in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict. He often spoke of his experiences on military boats.
In 1956 he settled in Lansing, where his two older sisters and several of Anderson’s cousins lived. He earned his associate degree from Lansing Community College and attended Michigan State University when he met his future wife, Garnett Palmer, a Traverse City girl.
Tom and Garnett were married on June 18, 1960 at Grace Episcopal Church in Traverse City. They lived in Lansing before moving to Traverse City and a cottage on Torch Lake in 1969. After Tom retired from the US Postal Service, they moved permanently to Torch Lake and wintered in Sedona, Arizona, only to move to Elk Rapids a year ago.
Tom worked in the Lansing and Traverse City post offices for 34 years, but the job he really loved most was being a landlord. Tom and Garnett owned and operated an apartment business in Traverse City for over 40 years. He was very proud of these qualities.
He was a hard worker, a loyal friend, and a loving husband. He is missed by everyone who knew him.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; and older siblings, Virginia, Bonnie Lou and Dick; furry friends too, Sid and Lily. He leaves behind his 60-year-old wife Garnett and their beloved collie dog Nora. Sister Patricia; several nephews; and nieces; Anderson Cousins; many friends; and former tenants.
Special thanks go to the staff and nurses at the Eden Center, Kalkaska Memorial Health Center, Heartland Hospice, and Elk Rapids doctors Steven Pray and Brian Rathke for Tom’s compassionate care.
The cremation took place with Inurnition at the Helena Township Cemetery in Alden. The service with military honors will take place in May 2021.
